Fourways pre-teen equestrian wins big at South African National Equestrian Schools Association Nationals

Young rider Caitlyn Rachel Pledger and her horse, Beretta’s Blues Axl, stole the spotlight at the 2025 SANESA Nationals.

At just 11 years old, Caitlyn Rachel Pledger has accomplished what many riders only dream of, claiming top honours at the 2025 South African National Equestrian Schools Association Nationals in show jumping.

With her loyal horse, Beretta’s Blues Axl, Caitlyn’s performance impressed the crowd, securing her place as one of South Africa’s most promising young equestrians.

Caitlyn reflected on the unforgettable experience. “Honestly, it felt incredible and almost unreal. Just being at nationals was a huge achievement, but walking out as a winner was the cherry on top. All the early mornings, late nights, and tough lessons suddenly felt completely worth it.”

She explained that before going into the ring, she was full of butterflies, “but once Axl and I cleared the first fence, the nerves melted away. We found our rhythm, and everything just came together. The moment I crossed the finish line, knowing we’d given it our all, was the best feeling ever.”

Caitlyn complemented her partner. “Axl is my rock. He’s a big, gentle giant. Calm, powerful, and full of heart. He can be grumpy at breakfast, but underneath, he’s the sweetest soul. He always tries his best for me, and I love him more than words can say.”

The two have shared an inseparable bond since Caitlyn received Axl as a surprise for her 10th birthday. “From our very first ride, I knew there was something special about him. We’re so alike. It’s like he’s me in horse form. We trust each other completely.”

Caitlyn also credits her coach, Claudia Graunke, for helping her develop as a rider.

This achievement follows her win at the 2024 South African Show Jumping Children’s Classics Blue Tour, with her pony Flinda.
