Fourways daredevils hit the streets in purple Speedos for Hollard Daredevil Run
From Dainfern to Florida, thousands of men took to the streets in purple Speedos to raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancers during the 16th annual Hollard Daredevil Run.
Gauteng woke up bright and early on October 31, as the first runners of the Hollard Daredevil Run took to the streets at Dainfern College and Estate, kicking off at 06:00.
The initiative, now in its 16th year, unites men across the country in a vibrant display of courage and purpose, all in support of prostate and testicular cancer awareness.

Neighbourhoods, sports clubs, office parks, and schools across Johannesburg, Pretoria, and the Vaal were awash in purple as daring runners, many clad only in iconic Daredevil Speedos, took part in the awareness campaign.
High schools, including Dainfern College, King David Linksfield, and Bryanston High School, hosted runs, while longstanding supporters, such as the Diepkloof Athletic Club, returned to Soweto, and Florida Running Club and Panorama Running Club led events in Florida.
Thousands more gathered at Zoo Lake, the main Johannesburg event, alongside representatives from the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).
All funds raised from the runs support education, screening, and outreach initiatives, particularly in under-resourced areas. “Last year alone, we conducted 1 000 PSA tests, trained 649 healthcare professionals, and ran outreach programmes across rural and underserved areas,” said Lorraine Govender, national manager of health programmes at Cansa. “This funding is truly life-saving, allowing us to educate, screen, and support men and their families to take control of their health.”
The iconic purple Speedo has become a symbol of hope and action. “We couldn’t be prouder of the impact it has in raising awareness, encouraging early detection, and ultimately saving lives across South Africa,” said Andrew Oberholzer, CEO of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa.

Hazel Chimhandamba, group chief marketing officer at Hollard, added: “Understanding the symptoms and available tests, as well as having access to testing facilities, is crucial in the fight against prostate and testicular cancers, which is why the Daredevil Run is such an effective platform. It gets people talking about men’s health in a fun, engaging, and approachable way.”
This year’s Daredevil Run in Gauteng joined dozens of other events nationwide, from Ermelo and Bethlehem, to Durban North, Kimberley, Mbombela, Potchefstroom, and Plettenberg Bay, demonstrating the wide reach and impact of the campaign.
Chimhandamba said prostate and testicular cancers remain serious health risks for men, but early detection through simple tests can be life-saving. Hollard, along with corporate partners including iTOO and C&R, encourages everyone to contribute via the BackABuddy platform to help save lives. “Together we can make a real difference and drive meaningful impact. Thank you to all the Daredevils who set out in their Speedos today. See you next year and bring a friend.”
