JMPD warns Johannesburg motorists of major road closures this Saturday ahead of G20

Heading out this weekend? Be warned. Many roads will be closed due to planned, co-ordinated law enforcement operations ahead of the G20 Summit.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has advised motorists and residents in Gauteng, particularly in the City of Johannesburg, of planned, co-ordinated law enforcement operations on November 15, in preparation for the G20.

According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, the operations will result in temporary road closures, lane restrictions, and intermittent disruptions across key routes in the city. “These operations will target high-security routes, including major national and regional roads, such as the N1, M1, and N12.”

In addition, major arterial and urban routes will be affected, these include 5th Street, Maud Street, Daisy Street, Rivonia Road, Gleeson Drive, Catherine Street in Santon, Jan Smuts Avenue in Randburg, and Winnie Mandela Drive in Fourways, amongst others.

The operations will take place between 09:00 and 13:00, during which rolling road closures will be implemented.

Fihla reassured residents that the closures will be periodic and intermittent to allow the joint operations to pass. “Once the operations have passed, the affected routes and roads will be reopened.”

Motorists are advised to consider alternative routes where possible.

In Fourways, alternative routes include Main Road, Witkoppen Road, and Cedar Road.

Within Sandton, Rosebank, and Parktown, motorists can use side streets parallel to Jan Smuts Avenue, Oxford Road, and Rivonia Road, as well as parts of Santon Drive, and 11th Avenue.

Fihla said that motorists should plan ahead, allow for additional travel time, and prioritise alternative routes when possible. “These measures are essential to enhance public safety and enforce traffic compliance in support of ongoing traffic law enforcement initiatives.”

He added that access for emergency and essential services will always be prioritised during the operations.
