Residents demand urgent action as Nanyuki Road becomes danger zone

Daily reckless driving and speeding on Nanyuki Road are putting families, pedestrians, and properties at risk, prompting calls for immediate traffic-calming measures.

Sunninghill Community Ratepayers Association is calling on residents to help sign the Sunninghill Community Traffic Calming petition, aimed at making Nanyuki Road safer for everyone.

The association wants immediate traffic-calming measures, such as speed humps, additional pedestrian crossings, and clearer signage, from the city to be installed.

Residents along Nanyuki Road are raising the alarm over what they describe as a growing danger from speeding and reckless driving on this busy single-lane route.

Serving as a key link between Barbeque Downs and Sandton, and as a shortcut between the N1 Allandale and N1 Rivonia ramps, the road attracts heavy traffic, frequent ‘rat-running,’ and dangerously high speeds.

According to Linda Gildenhuys, chair of the association, the unsafe conditions have led to multiple accidents, property damage, and risks to pedestrians, including children and families walking pets.

Gildenhuys explained the root of the problem: “With the development of Waterfall City and the number of roads built to enable development of the area, Sunninghill has seen a dramatic increase in traffic.

The roads in Waterfall, like the M9 and the new K60, all lead to Sunninghill. However, the Sunninghill roads have not been upgraded to cope with this.

The M9 is a double-lane road, which narrows into a single-lane residential road in Barbeque Downs and Sunninghill. Vehicles are now using these roads as shortcuts, causing major traffic mayhem.

“Not only has the increased traffic made it difficult for residents to enter and leave their suburb during peak hours, but the speeding is shocking. Nanyuki Road is a single-lane road where non-resident vehicles speed through, and over the past two years, there have been multiple accidents, complex walls knocked down, and injuries.

With traffic continuing to rise, it is only a matter of time before there is a fatality. We urgently need traffic-calming measures to slow down traffic and protect both properties and lives.”
