Met Gala for Matriculants redefines what the matric farewell is
While matric farewells have always marked the end of the school journey, Fourways entrepreneur Santiago Andrew has transformed the tradition into a powerful national platform, celebrating South Africa’s brightest youth.
What was once a customary matric farewell has been elevated into a cultural moment by Fourways entrepreneur Santiago Andrew.
Through the Met Gala for Matriculants, Andrew has created a stage where South Africa’s youth are not only celebrated for completing school; they’re recognised for their resilience, creativity, and leadership, and redefining how the country honors its youth.

Held on December 4 at the @Sandton Hotel, the gala gathered matriculants from all over South Africa for a night that celebrated identity, resilience, and bold self-expression. “The Met Gala for Matriculants wasn’t simply an event; it was a statement. When I started this, I wanted more than just a celebration. I aimed for a moment that tells every matriculant: You are worthy, you belong in these spaces, and if not, you create your own.”
From couture-inspired outfits to stunning entrances, the red carpet became a runway showcasing culture and confidence. The evening highlighted fashion and creativity that matched global stages, proving that South African youth are ready to shine without waiting for approval.

The night featured notable guests, including Christall K, from The Real Housewives of Johannesburg, Doqtor Cabbage, Girlie Lukhule, and internationally celebrated dancer Musa Motha. A virtual message from Tuesday Le Roux offered a heartfelt note of hope, urging learners to believe in their limitless potential.
A key aspect of the 2025 event was the sponsorship of ten high-achieving learners, who otherwise could not attend. One of them, Nthabiseng Sethe, described her experience as life-changing. “Imagine waking up on a random Tuesday to an invitation to a ball you’ve only ever seen in articles. As a matriculant who couldn’t afford to attend my own school’s matric dance, I found out it was The Met Gala For Matrics, the only youth event in Africa that truly recognises the best of the best matriculants from across the country.
“At first, I didn’t consider going. I had no hopes of showing up and turning heads, but Ruby Kanavathly, from Princess Project Midrand, in partnership with The Met Gala for Matriculants, had other plans. A dress? Sorted. Shoes? Sorted. A car? They simply asked: ‘What colour would you like?’. This event reminded me that I am someone, and that my efforts are worth honoring.”
