Councillor calls on JRA to address stormwater damage concerns on Randa Road
Ward 115 leadership has urged the Johannesburg Roads Agency to investigate alleged drainage diversion blamed for worsening road deterioration and safety risks for residents and motorists.
Ward 115 residents and councillor Mark van der Merwe have raised serious concerns about extensive road damage along Randa Road, attributing the deterioration to ongoing stormwater drainage problems.
According to Van der Merwe, stormwater from attenuation dams and drainage infrastructure in Duff Road is being redirected incorrectly, resulting in a continuous flow of water along Randa Road.
Instead of feeding into the existing drainage system on Changa Road, he claims the water has been diverted to a kerbside outlet located approximately 500m before the next kerbside inlet.

“The road is literally disintegrating because of the water. The edges are collapsing, the centre of the road is collapsing, and water is running underneath the asphalt, causing further damage.”
He explained that the constant saturation of the ground has already resulted in fallen trees and poses risks to motorists and nearby properties.<

“Residents have reportedly experienced damage to driveways, while visible cracks and erosion continue to worsen along the roadway.”
Shadow MMC for Transport Sean Krush said these concerns suggest the issue reflects a broader stormwater management challenge within the city.
“We have a stormwater management crisis, and without adequate funding, situations like this will continue to worsen.”

Van der Merwe further said that the stormwater diversion received approval from the Johannesburg Roads Agency, although he questioned the decision to divert water to a kerbside outlet rather than linking it to the established stormwater system.
JRA has been approached for comment regarding the alleged stormwater diversion, the current condition of Randa Road, and any planned interventions to address the reported damage. More information will be published once received.
