‘It’s worked for 2 months in 3 years’: Fourways intersection finally upgraded
Relief for Fourways motorists as delayed upgrades resume at the Witkoppen and Main roads intersection, with councillor Vino Reddy hopeful the long-troubled traffic lights will soon operate reliably.
Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy says long-awaited work at the Witkoppen and Main roads intersection is finally back on track, after weeks of inactivity left residents frustrated and confused.
Reddy was on site on February 16 to assess progress on the cabling and overall upgrades, after questioning why work had not been completed weeks earlier.
He said there was a period of nearly a week and a half when no contractors were present. “I’m glad the intersection is finally being repaired, because we’ve had ongoing problems with tampering and traffic light failures.

According to feedback received, the delay was caused by a shortage of materials, with teams only returning last Friday once components became available.
Reddy said the renewed activity has come as a relief to the community, many of whom believed the work had already been completed.

He added that while residents were initially told contractors were waiting for controllers, it now appears broader upgrades are underway, including the installation of sensors, which he hopes will improve power supply management and daylight operation at the intersection.
“I really hope these improvements put an end to what residents have been experiencing.” He added that the junction has been plagued by repeated failures, tampering, and traffic light outages over the past few years.
“In the last three years, this intersection has probably worked for only about two months,” Reddy said, adding that ongoing disruptions have created serious safety and traffic concerns for motorists and pedestrians alike.

He expressed hope that the current upgrades would finally bring stability to the intersection, which serves as a key route in Fourways.
Reddy said residents would be ‘extremely happy’ if the traffic lights could now operate continuously and reliably, describing the latest developments as an encouraging step toward resolving long-standing infrastructure issues.
He also addressed concerns from residents who feared the teams working on the traffic lights were tampering with cables.
“That is not the case. These are technicians carrying out legitimate repairs; no one is tampering with anything. I am happy there is progress.”
