Motorists and pedestrians are once again being urged to exercise caution when using the low-lying bridge in Sunninghill following heavy rainfall, which has led to a fresh build-up of debris.

Fourways Review recently visited the bridge and observed significant accumulation of debris along the pedestrian walkways, river banks, and guiderail of the bridge.

The debris, which includes branches, tree trunks, and other materials carried downstream, is raising concerns about potential flooding and public safety.

Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy said the bridge has a long-standing history of flooding due to its low-lying design. “Because it’s a low-lying bridge, flooding happens frequently. This is one of those bridges where people have unfortunately been swept away in their vehicles after attempting to cross when the river is in flood.

“The metal guards have been effective, but they do take damage. During floods, large debris, such as tree trunks and heavy branches, is carried down the river and gets caught in the structures.”

Following the recent rains, Reddy said he reported the latest debris build-up to provincial authorities, requesting urgent clearing.
