School principal Melissa Savage said: “Our Valentine’s picnic was inspired by the simple idea that children should grow up feeling deeply loved, secure, and connected, not only to their families, but to their friends, their teachers, and their school environment.”

Throughout the picnic, learners shared snacks, invited friends to sit beside them, and exchanged hugs and laughter, simple gestures that Savage said help nurture empathy and kindness from an early age.
“The message we hoped to share with our learners is that love lives in the smallest gestures, inviting a friend to sit beside you, sharing a snack, offering a hug, or simply saying: ‘You can play with me’. These are the foundations of empathy and kindness, and seeds we intentionally nurture each day.”
She noted that shared celebrations like the picnic help strengthen the school’s nurturing culture and create emotional security for learners, which supports confident learning and development.

The event also offered teachers an opportunity to step away from routine and share meaningful moments with learners, strengthening the bonds that make the school environment feel like a family.

“At Little Steps, we often say that children may forget what we taught them, but they will never forget how we made them feel. Celebrations such as these create lasting emotional memories and reinforce the warmth, care, and connection that define our community.”

Savage said watching friendships naturally unfold during the event was particularly touching, with learners proudly sharing treats, holding hands, and eagerly including one another in activities.
“As I looked around, I felt overwhelmingly grateful for our dedicated team, our beautiful children, and the extraordinary community we have built together. Days like this are not just events; they are reflections of the love that lives within Little Steps every single day.”
