Diepsloot imbizo links residents with vital support services
Residents gathered at Diepsloot Mall to get an insight into how they can tackle unemployment and curb substance abuse, leaving the community inspired with practical solutions and renewed hope.
Diepsloot residents showed up in numbers for the community imbizo programme, hosted by the Diepsloot Service Providers Forum (DSPF) at their mall.
The event involved both seniors and the youth, and gave the community a chance to raise their concerns and to learn about the services provided by their organisations.
Hellen Setumu, chairperson of DSPF, said: “Today’s event is an annual event where we get together to hear the cries of our communities and provide them with the services they need. The forum aims to achieve building a collaboration, partnership, and a strong referral system”.

Several organisations took part in the event, including the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca), the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA), and the department of employment and labour.
“At Sanca, we offer outpatient services focused on prevention, intervention, and treatment,” said representative from SANCA Central Rand Diepsloot Busi Mapeka. “A key part of our work is educating and supporting young people through school talks, awareness campaigns, and behaviour modification programmes, to help prevent substance abuse and guide them towards healthier choices.”

Many residents gained valuable insights, with some surprised to learn that they could access these services free of charge, while others left with renewed hope for future job opportunities.
One of the youth residents, Mohale Maropeng, expressed her gratitude. “I was invited here by my friend. Hearing that there might be an opportunity for people who don’t have matric, I thought I should come by. Indeed, they took our documents, and we signed the forms, so it’s fingers crossed now.”

Unemployment emerged as one of the major issues raised by the community during the imbizo, with many seeking information on job opportunities and training programmes.
Department of Employment and Labour Provincial Communication Officer Mishack Magakwe said: “We assist jobseekers through the employment services of South Africa system, which matches registered work seekers with vacancy offers and career counselling, and provides employability enhancement programmes that help our youth the most.”
The outreach initiative left Diepsloot residents feeling renewed hope and determination, as it offered meaningful insight into the vital role local organisations can play in supporting their needs.
