Small businesses find footing at Fourways community market

Behind the stalls at the Fourways Rustic & Gourmet market are stories of entrepreneurs with a hunger for success, and a shared push to make local businesses thrive.

Local is lekker is more than just a slogan at Design Quarter Shopping Centre in Fourways.

It’s a shared belief between the shopping centre and market founder Sue Gajathar, popularly known as the Vegan Chef, that encourages people to support local businesses

The market takes place on the first Friday of every month, aimed at supporting small, local businesses from handmade goods and artisanal foods to local artists and even spiritually uplifting stress relief sessions.

Marketing manager of the shopping centre Annah Moremela said they are proud to host traders who may not be able to afford permanent retail space. “For many of them, this is their livelihood. It’s also our way of giving back by creating a platform where small businesses can be seen and supported. We were also encouraged by their enthusiasm to come to the centre and showcase what they do best.”

The initiative has drawn a variety of local vendors, each with their own story. Among them is Innocent Manjengenja, a metal sculptor who also works with wood. He said the market has given him a valuable chance to put his work in front of people. “This is a good opportunity for me to showcase what I do. I’ve been doing this kind of art since high school, so being here and seeing people appreciate it really means something. This is my first time being here, but so far it has been good, and I am planning to come back. It is so encouraging to see people admire and understand what you do.”

He said the relaxed, open-air setting makes it easy for people to engage directly with the people behind the products. “We have something for everyone. Good music and food. Small businesses are encouraged to come, along with people to support local is lekker,” said Gajathar.
