Colourful 67 Blankets display is ready to warm hearts at Steyn City
Founder of the heart-warming movement, Carolyn Steyn, invites residents in Johannesburg to a vibrant showcase of creativity, compassion and community knitting.
A sea of colour, creativity and carefully stitched stories is set to take over City Centre in Steyn City as the 67 Blankets for Mandela Day movement prepares for its much-anticipated gathering that also celebrates World Creativity and Innovation Day on April 18.
From bold patterns to soft pastels, each handcrafted piece that would be on display carries more than just warmth but also reflects the hands and hearts behind it.
The initiative, founded by Carolyn Steyn, has grown into a global movement, bringing together ‘KnitWits’ from all walks of life who meet regularly to knit and crochet for those in need.

Steyn, while giving us a glimpse into what to expect, shared stories from the movement’s journey, including its time working with correctional facilities.
Because of her bubbly personality, she joked about having been ‘in prison for 10 or 11 years,’ before laughing it off and explaining how the project had worked closely with inmates across the country and knows no bounds.
She said that through knitting, many inmates found a renewed sense of purpose.
“They spoke about knitting their broken lives together and rebuilding trust. They were finding their humanity again.”
While that chapter is currently on pause due to management changes, the impact of those moments still resonates as she has beautiful blankets and also artworks curated for the initiative.

Steyn said the April 18 event will bring together knitting groups from across Johannesburg, each setting up their own gazebo and transforming the venue into a lively exhibition of handmade blankets.
It’s not just about looking, visitors can expect a full day out, with entertainment, food stalls and a chance to meet the people behind the movement.
From coffee to burgers and pizzas, there will be plenty to enjoy while taking in the displays.
The event is open to everyone, with free entry available through registration on Quicket. Families, supporters and curious visitors are all encouraged to come through and experience the movement up close.
