Councillor slams substandard repairs on Hornbill Road

Councillor Chris Santana warns that poor repair quality and long delays continue to put motorists at risk on Hornbill Road near Curro Douglasdale.

Ward 106 councillor Chris Santana says he is not satisfied with the quality of repairs currently underway on Hornbill Road near Curro Douglasdale.
He described the work as substandard and unacceptable. “You can see the substandard work of how they’ve tried to put things back into place, even using cardboard. We’re talking about storm water infrastructure. I do not feel this is up to even Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) standards.”

Speaking during a recent site visit, Santana pointed to ongoing storm water repairs at the site, which has been problematic for more than 18 months. “This issue has been ongoing for more than 18 months. When I did a site visit with JRA and Johannesburg Water, I was promised that this issue would be resolved.”

He added that the ongoing delays and poor workmanship continue to pose risks to road users, as half of the road is currently closed. Santana said the issue began when Johannesburg Water repaired a pipe burst in the area, but damaged and closed off a storm water inlet in the process. The infrastructure was never properly reinstated, leaving the road to flood.

Santana warned that the missing storm water system has caused water to pool on the road during heavy rains, creating hazards for motorists. “I’ve been fighting to get the storm water inlet reinstated because the road floods when there’s heavy rain.”

Fourways Review followed up with JRA regarding this, and, while Mosa Makhalima acknowledged our media enquiries, not further information has been forthcoming. We will publish their response once it becomes available.
