Blankets cover Steyn City as community comes together for a good cause

The KnitWits were hard at work knitting even more blankets and other handcrafted items that would be donated to those in need.

Steyn City turned into a colourful display of handmade blankets as the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day organisation hosted an event.

The community gathered on April 18 at Steyn City Centre, after founder Carolyn Steyn invited the community to be part of the special day. The blankets were carefully knitted and crocheted by volunteers, known as KnitWits, for a good cause.

While the event itself was a moment of celebration, Steyn said the most meaningful part is still to come. “April 20 is when the real, meaningful work will begin. These blankets will be distributed to old age homes, orphanages, informal settlements, rural areas, and oncology units, among others. It is so heartwarming to see the difference that you guys make, stitch by stitch. We are knitting our lives and nations together.”

One of the proudest moments of the event came when Jeppe High School donated 670 blankets, drawing applause from the crowd and adding to the growing collection that will soon be handed over to those in need.

In preparation for the event, the Steyn City area had been covered in bright, colourful blankets. Even the rain, earlier on April 17, did not dampen the mood. Instead, organisers saw it as a blessing.

“We laid plastic on the ground, so that the blankets didn’t get too wet, but we’re happy that the sun came out today,” said Annie Robinson Grealy, the head of 67 Blankets For Nelson Mandela Day.

Robison Grealy said she was pleased with how successful the event turned out. “When we counted the people who registered on Quicket, we had over 653 people.”

She added that the turnout shows just how much people want to be part of doing good and making a difference in the lives of others.
