Easter visit by Diepsloot fondation brings smiles and tears to children at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital

With the support of community donations, the visit brought treats, smiles and heartfelt moments to children battling cancer, offering comfort and reminding them that they are not alone in this journey.

Refilwe Sedumedi, founder of the Sedumedi Hope Foundation, fulfilled her promise to visit children at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital over the Easter holidays.
In preparation for the visit, she rallied community members to donate so that they could help her to spread a little love and comfort to the little ones undergoing cancer treatment.

The children were given treats and sweets, including Easter eggs. “The way the children receive us, you can see they really appreciate it. It’s not just about what we bring, it’s about the hope.”

She said the day was filled with excitement as children lit up at the sight of visitors, enjoying treats and a break from their daily challenges. But behind the smiles were stories that were difficult to hear.

One moment that stood out for Sedumedi was her interaction with a 15-year-old boy battling osteosarcoma, a malignant bone tumour.

“The teenager has already lost several close family members from his maternal side due to cancer. He said he’s tired of people telling him he’ll be fine, because he knows he won’t, and he feels like God is punishing him. For the first time since I started this journey, I broke down. I couldn’t hold it in.”

Despite the heartbreak, Sedumedi believes these experiences highlight the importance of giving back. “You realise you’re making a difference in someone’s life, even without expecting anything in return. That alone brings peace.”

The foundation relies on community donations, often received at the last minute, which can make preparations stressful. However, this year saw an encouraging turnout, with dozens of supporters coming together.

Sedumedi expressed gratitude to donors and volunteers who continue to support the foundation’s work. Looking ahead, the organisation hopes to expand its reach and continue making a difference.
