City of Johannesburg safety team stages evacuation drill to test emergency readiness

Residents at Norscot Manor took part in a timely evacuation drill led by city officials as winter approaches and fire risks rise.

An evacuation drill may only last a few minutes, but for those responsible for safety, every second counts.

The occupational health and safety team from the City of Johannesburg conducted an evacuation drill at Norscot Manor recreational centre in Fourways on April 28.

The aim was to prepare occupants for a potential emergency situation. While drills are routine, the focus this time was on ensuring that people understand how to respond calmly and correctly when it matters most.

The co-ordinator of the drill, who asked not to be named, explained to the tenants that panic remains one of the biggest risks during an emergency. “When people panic, they tend to run, and that’s when accidents happen. We always remind them to stay calm and walk, because rushing can lead to falls or injuries.”

During the exercise, occupants were guided to exit the building in an orderly manner. The emphasis was not only on speed, but on awareness and responsibility.

As people made their way out, safety checks were carried out thoroughly.

“We go through every area. We check offices, toilets, and all spaces to make sure no one is left behind. In a real fire, someone left inside could be in serious danger.”

Once outside, everyone gathered at a designated assembly point. There, an important step followed, the roll call. Since all individuals entering the facility are required to register, it becomes easier to account for every person during an emergency.

“We verify that everyone is present and safe. That register helps us confirm quickly if anyone is missing so action can be taken immediately.”

This drill came at a good time. As winter approaches, people find various ways to stay warm and cozy for the chilly season, which includes lighting fires in enclosed spaces. Drills like this help everyone know what to do if a fire starts.
