End of costly tyre damage in sight for Winnie Mandela Drive users
The R5m road upgrade is visibly transforming a once-damaged stretch into a smoother drive, even as traffic delays continue during construction on the road.
Motorists travelling along Winnie Mandela Drive in Fourways are beginning to see long-awaited improvements as road rehabilitation work gains momentum.
Subcontractors, appointed by the Gauteng roads and transport department, began milling operations over the weekend, following a commitment made on April 30.

So far, work has been completed from the Witkoppen Bridge through to the first intersection at Witkoppen Road, with more sections expected to follow toward Montecasino Boulevard, where they will end. The project is valued at approximately R5m.
Wandile Hlatshwayo, an engineer, previously described the deteriorated road surface as resembling crocodile skin due to extensive cracking and the potholes that had formed over time.
He said the new asphalt is about 3 to 6cm from the road surface, and explained the reasons behind that. He confirmed that this is also a temporary project, but with long term results.
“Where the base underneath is still strong, it will be left as is, but in areas where the foundation has been damaged, teams will repair the base first before laying a new asphalt surface on top.”

That damage had taken a toll on motorists, many of whom reported tyre damage and costly vehicle repairs.

Ward 94 councillor David Foley said he is pleased to finally see progress, especially after months of complaints from residents. “The condition of the road had become a serious concern, with many residents spending money on repairs due to the potholes. It’s good to see that the issue is now being addressed.

“I’d like to thank Khulani Mathebula, who I have been in touch with for a while to address the issue. He has been very co-operative and helpful. They also did the road repairs on Main Road before coming to Winnie Mandela Drive. The team is committed they even work at night.”
While traffic is currently backed up due to ongoing construction, drivers are already benefiting from smoother sections where milling has been completed. Some were even hooting at the team as they work to express their sigh of relief.
Construction activity remains visible along the route, with teams continuing work to restore one of Fourways’ busiest roads.
