Lonehill author instils confidence in children through affirmation

Local author Kerry Chapman is turning years of experience in children’s development into a powerful tool to help young minds grow in confidence and self-belief.

Lonehill-based author Kerry Chapman is helping shape confident young minds through her self-published children’s book, I Am Brave, a project rooted in nearly two decades of working with children.

Chapman, who has spent years using drama and self-expression to develop children’s confidence, said she wanted to extend that impact beyond the classroom.

“Having spent nearly two decades witnessing how drama and self-expression can transform a child’s demeanour, I wanted to create a tangible tool that children could take home with them.”

Together with her husband, Luke, Chapman identified a growing need for consistent emotional support tools for children. “Children need a constant, gentle reminder of their own inner strength.”

The book, I Am Brave, centres on a simple yet powerful message: Bravery is not about being fearless, but about moving forward despite fear. Through carefully crafted affirmations, Chapman said she hopes to show children that courage already exists within them, whether they are starting a new school, trying a new activity, or learning to speak up.

Chapman believes that building self-belief early in life is essential in today’s environment. “When children feel confident, they are more resilient, more willing to take creative risks, and better equipped to handle the ups and downs of growing up.”

The affirmations featured in the book draw directly from her experience working with children.

“The phrases in the book are the same ones I’ve used in my classrooms to help children find their voices.”

Designed for children aged two to six, the book is intended to be used both at home and in educational settings. Chapman said it can form part of daily routines, creating opportunities for connection while reinforcing positive self-talk.

She said, since its release, the book has been met with strong community support. “Seeing parents share stories of their toddlers reciting the affirmations has been incredibly heartwarming.”

As part of promoting the book, she is hosting interactive readings and workshops, bringing the message of bravery to life through engaging and energetic sessions. “It’s not just about sitting and listening. We make it an experience.”
