Promises without action frustrate Sunninghill residents as utilities remain silent

With no response from Johannesburg Water or JRA, Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy says he will keep pushing for urgent repairs to Sunninghill’s open trenches and worsening infrastructure.

Who is officially responsible for key inlet (KI) repairs and replacements, Johannesburg Water or Johannesburg Roads Agency? Please share when is it going to be attended to and why it took this long.

These are the questions that were sent to Johannesburg Water and Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) as frustration continues to grow over damaged roads, open excavations, and repeated water leaks in Ward 93.

The enquiry was submitted on April 30, following a site visit organised by Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy, where Fourways Review was invited to witness the condition of the infrastructure on the ground.

At the centre of the matter is an open excavation at the corner of Lingerett Lane and Tana Road, a site Reddy says has been left in a worsening condition for months.

During a follow-up visit, on May 13, the scene remained largely unchanged, with no visible work taking place and no indication of active repairs.

Reddy said the delay around the KI replacement has now stretched for months. “It’s been more than three months now. When I inquire, I’m told it could be administrative or payment issues between the departments, but the community is the one living with the impact.”

Fourways Review also put direct questions to the entities, including whether internal disputes between departments are contributing to the delay, and why, despite months passing, has there still been no resolution or visible progress on site.

Johannesburg Water’s Phakamani Ndlovu acknowledged receipt of the enquiry, saying that the matter would be addressed within the standard turnaround time of 24 to 48 hours.

However, despite that response, no further update was provided by the deadline of May 5.
Reddy also confirmed that he has not received any clear breakdown of responsibility or timelines for when repairs will begin.

“It is frustrating to be ignored, especially after promises being made. That is why I am asking the entities to do it for the residents, so that they can continue with their normal life.”
JRA, through spokesperson Bertha Scheepers, said:

“[We] will provide a consolidated response,” but, at the time of publication, no substantive response had been received from either entity.
