Wordsmith on hip-hop, growth, and giving back
Rapper and fashion designer Njabulo 'Wordsmith' Gininda opens up about his journey, the power of travel, staying true to his sound, and his vision to uplift the next generation of hip-hop artists.
Hip-hop artist Njabulo ‘Wordsmith’ Gininda is making his mark in South Africa with conscious lyrics and a clear sense of purpose. “My journey started in Mpumalanga, Middelburg,” he recalls. “My uncle, a big Tupac fan, influenced me with his music and style. He even wrote my first verse, and I began performing at school and church.”
Early on, Wordsmith focused on writing for himself. “When I was a Christian, I got exposure to rap about themes and people’s stories that shape my writing. It also improved my live performance skills and staying on topic.”

Travelling has broadened his perspective. “Experiencing different provinces taught me how people think and live together. It also helped me learn up to eight languages and appreciate diverse cultures.”
He’s also learned valuable lessons about artistry. “Be open to new sounds, but stay true to your style. Research topics thoroughly, and draw inspiration from life outside the studio, living, having fun, and understanding others.”

Community remains central to his philosophy. “It’s important to share the light with others and support young creatives. Respect those who paved the way, even if you don’t agree with everything they do. Showing appreciation is key.”

Wordsmith approaches his craft with intention. “Life is serious, and meaningful change starts with small efforts. Every song I create reflects my life and perspective, aiming to inspire or teach someone.
“I want to touch one person, inspire a kid, that’s how change begins. I aim to leave a mark and uplift platforms like Back to the City, supporting raw talent and the art of storytelling. I envision a hub for art, fashion, and workshops to grow hip-hop’s economy and nurture young artists.”
Ultimately, Wordsmith’s goal is to be a major player and decision-maker in the industry. “I want to open doors for others and own a part of this game.”
