Flooding worsens at Fourways corner as Johannesburg Water remains silent

Exposed cables and severe erosion continue to plague the busy Fourways corner, while residents, traders, and ward councillor awaits action from Johannesburg Water.

Almost two months later, Johannesburg Water remains silent as the ongoing flooding at the corner of Winnie Mandela Drive and Fourways Boulevard worsens.

On April 17, Phakamani Ndlovu, of Johannesburg Water, acknowledged our inquiry, promising to revert with a response within 24 to 48 hours. Since then, follow-ups have been sent but no communication has been received.

Fourways Review revisited the site recently and found that the flooding has intensified, with water continuing to flow outside of the designated drainage system and carving deeper channels into the roadside.

The Gauteng department of roads and transport confirmed that the issue is linked to a leaking Johannesburg Water pipe, while Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy said the situation may be more complex than initially believed, and could involve damage to the storm water infrastructure itself. “I don’t know what happened here, but from what I can see, there was a cable crew that had laid a new cable across here. It was fibre. I think wherever they dug, what they backfilled got washed away in the storm.

“It exposed a whole new channel that has suddenly formed, a drain on this side and has created a whole new channel.

“I think further investigation needs to be done of the stream here, because I think the storm water channel is broken, which is why the water is coming in here.”

Informal traders operating at the intersection previously told Fourways Review the issue has persisted for years, beginning as a small problem, but worsening over time.

According to traders, the flooding escalated after repairs were conducted in the area, resulting in water no longer flowing through the intended storm water system.
