Fourways Crossing hosts heartwarming knit day in support of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day
As part of the 67 Blankets global initiative, the community came together at Fourways Crossing to learn how to stitch and create something meaningful with their hands.
Eagle Falls Spur, at Fourways Crossing, became a hub of creativity on June 13, as the global 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative brought community members together for a day of knitting, crochet, and giving back.
The event aimed to spread warmth, both literally and figuratively, to those in need, this cold season.
Sipho Mashinini, the operating partner of Eagle Falls Spur, shared how the initiative came to life. “The idea was introduced through Beverly Sefuralo, a marketing manager at the centre, who approached me about partnering with the 67 Blankets global movement.”

He said he got excited after learning more about the project and immediately saw its value. “It was a good idea. I thought the community should be involved. We need to give back.”
Mashinini also highlighted the centre’s broader commitment to community upliftment. He said beyond the knitting event, Eagle Falls Spur regularly engages with schools through sponsorships and shadow shift evenings, where a portion of the day’s turnover is donated to school sports teams, such as netball or football.
He added that while he had not yet taken part in knitting lessons, he intended to try before the day ended, joking that a beret would be his first attempt.
Sefuralo described the event as a community effort to bring people together at Fourways Crossing to knit for a cause that supports vulnerable individuals, including the homeless. “We are here to remind them that they are not alone.”
She further noted the strong support from tenants such as Spur, who provided essential materials including wool, needles, and crochet hooks, making it possible for participants to create blankets that would later be distributed to those in need.

67 Blankets ambassador Lisa Mancer echoed the spirit of the day, welcoming participants to what she described as a global day of knitting in public. She celebrated the turnout, estimating around 67 participants or more, all contributing to a shared mission of kindness.
Holding up a finished blanket, Mancer explained how simple materials and collective effort can be transformed into something meaningful that reaches those who need warmth most. “We are always willing to help those in need and that is what we do best.”
