Little Steps Pre-School welcomed the arrival of spring with a burst of energy, laughter and colour when it hosted its own colour run on September 1.

The event allowed the school’s young learners to celebrate the new season through movement, play and a memorable sensory experience. According to school principal Melissa Savage, the colour run was about much more than simply having fun. “At Little Steps, we believe childhood should be colourful, joyful, messy, active and filled with experiences that children will remember,” said Savage. She explained that spring, with its themes of new beginnings, growth and colour, provided the perfect opportunity for the children to embrace the season in a hands-on way.

The colour run was not a competition, with the emphasis placed on participation rather than speed or finishing first. “There were no winners or losers. Instead, it was about movement, laughter, friendship and simply experiencing the joy of being a child,” Savage said.

The activity also supported important areas of early childhood development. Running, jumping and navigating the course helped the children develop their gross motor skills, balance, co-ordination, spatial awareness and confidence.

For the school, combining physical activity with colour, music and sensory experiences is another way of making learning engaging and meaningful for young children. Savage said one of the highlights was seeing the children begin the day relatively clean before finishing covered from head to toe in colour. “It reminded us that childhood isn’t supposed to be perfectly tidy. Sometimes the very best learning happens when little hands are dirty, clothes are messy, cheeks are colourful and laughter is loud,” she said.

The celebration also reflected the growth the school sees in its learners every day as they develop new skills, build friendships and grow in confidence. “Spring is a season of growth, and that is something we are incredibly privileged to witness every day at Little Steps,” Savage said.

For the pre-school, the colour run was ultimately a celebration of movement, friendship, colour and childhood – while creating memories the children can carry with them as they continue to grow. “At Little Steps, we don’t just want children to remember what they learnt. We want them to remember how childhood felt,” Savage said.
