Exclusive Books and 67 Blankets stitch together new friendships ahead of Nelson Mandela Day
A nationwide initiative is bringing communities together through crochet, creativity, and kindness as Exclusive Books partners with 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day.
Exclusive Books has partnered with 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day to host a series of nationwide crochet activations, aimed at fostering creativity, building friendships, and strengthening community connections.
The initiative, Crocheting new circles of friendships, is taking place at Exclusive Books stores across South Africa, inviting people of all ages and skill levels to come together, learn new skills, and contribute to a movement rooted in kindness and giving back.

According to Maria Varfis, chief marketing officer of Exclusive Books, the collaboration reflects the retailer’s belief that communities are built through more than just a shared love of books.
“We have always believed that books and stories have the power to bring people together, but communities are built through many forms of creativity and connection. So, the opportunity to partner with 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day was a natural fit.”
She said the initiative creates welcoming spaces where people can connect while making a meaningful contribution.
“Crocheting new circles of friendships is about creating welcoming spaces where people can learn, share, connect, and contribute to something larger than themselves. We are delighted to open our stores to a movement that has touched so many lives and inspired such extraordinary acts of kindness.”

The activations form part of the lead-up to Nelson Mandela Day, celebrated annually on July 18, when South Africans are encouraged to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to community service in honour of the late statesman’s 67 years of public service.
The partnership also highlights the continued impact of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, a movement that has united thousands of volunteers across the country through the knitting and crocheting of blankets for those in need.
Lynton Lefevre, marketing manager of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, said the collaboration with Exclusive Books will help expand the movement’s reach, while creating opportunities for new friendships to flourish.

“At its heart, 67 Blankets is about bringing people together through creativity, kindness, and a shared sense of purpose.
This partnership with Exclusive Books is a wonderful example of that spirit in action, helping us create new groups of friendships across South Africa… One stitch, one story, and one meaningful connection at a time.”
The organisers hope the initiative will encourage more people to participate in acts of service this Nelson Mandela Day, while demonstrating how simple acts of creativity can help build stronger, more connected communities.
