Organiser invites residents to join Braamfontein Spruit clean-up
Community members are encouraged to roll up their sleeves and help protect one of Johannesburg's most important waterways during the next SpruitSpritz clean-up on June 27.
Residents, environmental enthusiasts, and community volunteers are invited to take part in the next SpruitSpritz clean-up of the Braamfontein Spruit on June 27.
Volunteers will meet at 08:00 at the Braamfontein Spruit access point via Milcliff Road, using the service road between the Willowbrooke and Bryanston Manor complexes in Paulshof. The clean-up will run until 10:00.

The monthly initiative forms part of the ongoing SpruitSpritz volunteer collective effort to remove litter and pollution from the Sand and Braamfontein spruits, while raising awareness about the importance of protecting local waterways and green spaces.
One of the organisers, Chantal Natival, said the clean-ups play a vital role in preserving the environment and strengthening communities.
“These clean-ups are important because we are actively caring for our abandoned green belts and remaining wildlife, our jeopardised water resource, property values, and neighbourhood safety.”

Nativel said the initiative has been running successfully since September 2020, with volunteers removing tonnes of waste from local waterways each year.

Community members, schools, and environmental groups regularly participate, helping to improve the health of the spruits and surrounding greenbelts.
Residents attending the clean-up are encouraged to bring thick, waterproof gloves, spiky garden hand tools, and drinking water. Community service hours can be signed off for learners, although volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Nativel also encouraged residents, or businesses, who are unable to attend in person to support the initiative by sponsoring a gardener.
SpruitSpritz clean-ups are generally held on the last Saturday of every month, although meeting points may vary.
