City of Johannesburg hosts service delivery open day to tackle Riverside View concerns
The community had the opportunity to raise service delivery concerns directly with City of Johannesburg officials during an open day aimed at improving access to municipal services and resolving long-standing billing and infrastructure issues.
The City of Johannesburg brought municipal services closer to the people, when it hosted a municipal open day at Riverside Square on August 4.
This, as a result, gave Riverside View residents the opportunity to engage directly with city officials and entities on issues affecting their daily lives.
The initiative, supported by Ward 96 councillor Rufas Maswazi, saw several city entities set up service desks to assist residents with enquiries ranging from billing disputes to electricity, water, and sewer related concerns.

Maswazi welcomed the strong turnout, saying he was pleased that the city had responded to his call to bring essential services directly to the community. Among the entities present were Region A citizen relationship and urban management (Crum), Johannesburg Water, and City Power.
According to Maswazi, the open day also formed part of the city’s debt relief programme, spearheaded by Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Finance Loyiso Masuku.
Residents with concerns about municipal accounts, particularly those who believed their rates had been incorrectly billed, were encouraged to seek assistance from the relevant departments.

“We wanted to make everyone in Riverside View more aware of the services that the city offers,” Crum’s Thelani Nodu said. “We are here not only to assist residents, but also to serve them because that is what the City of Johannesburg is here to do.”
She added that the event also allowed city officials to engage directly with residents and address concerns before they escalated.
Nodu said rates and taxes, as well as water and electricity enquiries, were among the most common issues raised during the day.
“We understand that these have been major concerns among residents. This outreach is intended to assist with those queries and help alleviate existing challenges.”
She described the turnout as encouraging, particularly for a relatively new development, and expressed hope that the initiative would pave the way for stronger partnerships between the city, local stakeholders, and the community.
