Community to march for answers after Diepsloot girl’s tragic death
Community members gathered at Boxer today before embarking on a peaceful walk to the home of late Maria ‘Monene’ Hiine, where they hope to comfort her grieving family and later demand progress on the police investigation into her death.
The Diepsloot community are uniting in a peaceful walk to show support for the family of Maria ‘Monene’ Hiine, whose tragic death has left residents heartbroken and searching for answers.
Community leader Jacob Shika said the purpose of the visit is to stand with the grieving family, offer emotional support, and find out what assistance they may need during this difficult time.

Hiine was reported missing after she was last seen in Diepsloot Ext 1. A missing person poster circulated widely across social media as residents joined the search, hoping she would be found safe. Unfortunately, the community was later devastated when news emerged that she had been found dead.
Shika said the march is intended to remain peaceful and respectful, with the focus on showing compassion to the bereaved family.
“We want to be there for the family, hear from them and understand how we, as a community, can support them.”

After visiting the family, residents plan to continue to the Diepsloot Police Station, where they hope to engage police on the progress of the investigation.
According to Shika, community members want updates on the case and are calling for those responsible for Hiine’s death to be identified and brought to justice.
