Marching Diepsloot community postpones police visit after family not home
Diepsloot residents ended their planned march early, after learning Maria Hiine’s family had gone to the morgue, with the community now set to regroup.
The Diepsloot community’s planned march in support of the family of Maria ‘Monene’ Hiine took an unexpected turn after residents discovered the grieving family was not at home.
Community members had gathered at Boxer before embarking on a peaceful walk to Hiine’s home with the intention of offering condolences, finding out how they could assist the family, and later proceeding to the Diepsloot Police Station to seek an update on the investigation into her death.

However, upon arriving at the family’s home, neighbours informed the group that the family had gone to the morgue.
Community leader Jacob Shika then addressed the gathering, saying it would be inappropriate to continue with the day’s programme without first hearing from the family.
“The purpose of the march was to stand alongside the bereaved family and understand what support they needed before engaging with the police.
“Now, with the family not being available, we cannot continue with our march today. We must wait for their feedback.”

As a result, the community decided not to continue to the Diepsloot Police Station as initially planned. Instead, residents agreed to postpone the next steps until they have an opportunity to meet with the family.
“We will gather again on Saturday, with the hopes the family will be available to share their wishes and discuss how the community can best support them.”
Only after that engagement will residents decide on the way forward regarding a visit to the police station to request updates on the investigation and continue their call for justice.
