Buttercup Preschool launches community duck hunt to bring families together

A yellow rubber duck, exciting prizes, and weekly clues are all part of Buttercup Preschool's new community initiative aimed at getting families outdoors and exploring Lonehill together.

Families in Lonehill are invited to put their detective skills to the test as Buttercup Preschool launches a fun-filled community duck hunt every Sunday until the end of August.
The initiative will see a single yellow rubber duck hidden in a different public location across Lonehill each week, encouraging children and their families to enjoy the outdoors while searching for the prize-winning duck.

According to Buttercup Preschool’s Nadine Davidson, the duck will be hidden at midnight every Saturday in a public area and will remain there until it is found. Residents who would like a head start can contact the preschool before each Sunday for clues. A reminder and clue will also be shared every Friday on Buttercup Preschool’s social media platforms.

The duck will be clearly marked with the message: ‘Return me home to Buttercup Preschool for your prize.’ Davidson added: “We are going to hide the duck so well so families can enjoy quality time together on a walkabout in the fresh air with their children.”

The first duck hunt will take place in Lonehill Park, while future locations are expected to include child-friendly venues such as Otter Estates, Lonehill Veterinary Hospital, and Vered Estate Agents, helping to support local businesses by increasing foot traffic. There will be only one duck hidden each Sunday, although organisers say they may introduce a second duck if the initiative proves popular.

Children who find the duck can return it to Buttercup Preschool between 08:00 and 16:00, Monday to Friday, to collect a prize. “Prizes include chocolate hampers, toy hampers, children’s games, and creative art hampers.”

Davidson said the duck hunt is open to all children in the community and aims to encourage outdoor play, family bonding, and community engagement throughout the winter season. Community members can also call the school on 011 467 6868 for more information.
