New safety gear keeps Paulshof’s cleaning heroes safe
Community donations have helped provide the PRRA maintenance team with new protective equipment, ensuring they can continue caring for Paulshof's public spaces and supporting the SpruitSpritz clean-up initiative safely.
The Paulshof superheroes, who work behind the scenes to keep the suburb clean, are now better equipped to do their jobs safely, thanks to the generosity of local residents.
The Paulshof Residents and Ratepayers Association (PRRA) recently provided its maintenance team with new safety gear after residents responded to an appeal to support the workers who maintain the suburb’s parks, open spaces, and public areas. The team also supports the volunteer-led SpruitSpritz initiative by assisting with monthly clean-ups along the Braamfontein Spruit.

The upgrade follows concerns raised by the team about the challenges they face while carrying out their duties, including removing cables and wires by hand and working without adequate protective equipment. PRRA environmental committee member Cheyenne King said the maintenance team has served the community faithfully for many years, and deserves the necessary equipment to work safely. “Our guys work with us every Tuesday, and although they are only with us once a week, the resources we have help us maintain Paulshof as the beautiful community we’re trying to preserve.
“They’ve been with the PRRA for many years, and it became clear that their uniforms and safety gear needed upgrading. We would still love more support, but many residents donated funds, which enabled us to buy the team new safety boots, overalls, raincoats, sun hats, earmuffs for hearing protection when using brush cutters, and protective eyewear.” She added that the new uniforms have also been branded to raise awareness of the PRRA’s work and encourage further community involvement.

On behalf of the maintenance team, Elias Ndabandaba thanked everyone who contributed towards the new equipment. “We can now continue keeping Paulshof clean, while being properly protected. We really appreciate the community’s support.”

The PRRA hopes the donations will not only improve the team’s safety, but also encourage more residents to support the ongoing work of maintaining Paulshof’s green spaces and assisting initiatives such as SpruitSpritz, which plays a vital role in protecting the Braamfontein Spruit from litter and pollution.
