Johannesburg Water mum on plans to fix Jukskei Park sewage spills
Johannesburg Water has remained silent on long-term plans to prevent raw sewage from pouring into the Klein Jukskei River from a blocked manhole.
Persistent sewage spills near the Jukskei sewer pump station continue to foul parts of Jukskei Park, raising environmental and public health concerns for nearby residents and businesses.
Johannesburg Water (JW) confirmed the pump station is operational, but acknowledged a nearby manhole frequently blocks, causing sewage to overflow towards the Klein Jukskei River. Nombuso Shabalala, spokesperson for JW, explained that its SCADA telemetry system does not detect blockages occurring before the pump station, requiring depot teams to respond reactively.

Residents demand lasting infrastructure solution
A resident noted that the unbearable stench has persisted for roughly 12 years, with sewage flowing even when the station is offline. Others say reactive maintenance is insufficient, and are calling for a permanent solution to protect the watercourse.
Although the pump station was upgraded in July 2022 under phase 1, Johannesburg Water confirmed the facility remains temporary. Phase 2 is currently with the programme management unit, but no implementation timeline has been provided.
