Sunninghill residents demand action over delayed Tiati Road stormwater drain repairs

Residents say nothing has changed months after raising concerns about a damaged stormwater drain on Tiati Road.

Sunninghill residents and the Sunninghill Community Ratepayers’ Association (SCRA) are pressing for clarity after repairs to a damaged stormwater drain on Tiati Road missed the Johannesburg Roads Agency’s (JRA) promised July completion date.

The SCRA said the section has been left unrepaired for about eight months, with little feedback on progress.

Tracy Kensey, suburb manager for SCRA, explained that three infrastructure bursts had occurred in quick succession along the road. While other affected sections were reinstated, the area near the intersection of Lingaret and Tana roads remains incomplete.

She said the damaged drain supports a concrete base structure that must be properly reinstated.
“Engineers previously informed us that replacement parts were needed, but feedback on when the work will be completed has been lacking,” Kensey said.

Responding to an earlier inquiry from Fourways Review, JRA’s acting head of regional operations, Mpho Maruping, confirmed the agency was aware of the damage and attributed it to critical water infrastructure maintenance undertaken by Joburg Water.

Maruping said JRA had resources available but was waiting for Joburg Water to issue the necessary order under their service-level agreement.
“As soon as we get the order from JW, the team will attend to the repairs,” he said.

JRA further stated that it had planned to complete the work in July, dependent on receiving the order. But with July long past, residents said the site remains untouched.

The missed deadline has raised questions about whether the order was ever issued, what is holding up the process, and when the road will finally be reinstated.

Joburg Water has also been asked to clarify the status of the order and the maintenance work that reportedly caused the damage. Their responses will be published once received.

Fourways Review has sent follow-up inquiries to both JRA and Joburg Water, asking:

  • Whether JRA has received the required order from Joburg Water
  • Why repairs remain outstanding
  • When completion can now be expected
