Ward 94 councillor David Foley welcomes cameras on Winnie Mandela Drive

Ward 94 councillor David Foley has welcomed the installation of cameras along Winnie Mandela Drive, saying the development could help tackle crime and dangerous driving on the busy road.
The cameras are being installed between Kingfisher Drive and Montecasino Boulevard, with Foley hopeful that the initiative will improve safety for motorists and pedestrians. “I’m really pleased to see this happening. These cameras could make a real difference in helping to prevent crime and making this stretch of road safer for everyone.”

He said the cameras could help deter smash-and-grab incidents, which put motorists at risk, particularly when stopping at intersections. “Smash-and-grabs are a serious concern, and anything that can help deter criminals and make people feel safer on the road is a positive step,” he said.
Foley also pointed to motorists who ignore traffic signals, saying the system could help address reckless behaviour at intersections. “People who drive through red traffic lights put other road users in danger. If these cameras can help identify those motorists and hold them accountable, then that’s another important step towards safer roads.”
The installation comes amid concerns about streetlights that have reportedly been out at several intersections across the area, including along Winnie Mandela Drive and other major routes. Poor lighting has raised further questions about visibility and safety after dark, particularly for motorists travelling through intersections.

The Fourways Review emailed the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport for comment on the purpose of the camera installation, when the cameras are expected to become operational, and the reported streetlight outages.
The department was also asked whether vandalism of streetlights was suspected and what measures were being taken to restore lighting and improve safety along the affected roads. No response had been received at the time of going to print.
