Lonehill firefighters educate young Glenferness learners on the importance of knowing basic fire safety

In line with their fire safety theme, learners at Precious Poppets Preschool received a visit from the City of Johannesburg’s firefighters.

‘ A firefighter is your friend. Do not be afraid of firefighter’. A message that was emphasised to the young learners of Precious Poppets Preschool in Glenferness.

Learners from the school received a visit from firefighters from the Lonehill Fire Station in accordance with their theme of learning fire safety. Many songs were sung in regard to fire safety.

Intended to help learners to remember what to do when in danger. The young learners also got to view how a fire hose works and what safety gear firefighters wear when called to a fire.
The principal at the school, Darrylanne Horsten said the learners took well to the lessons taught at the discussion.

“We thought this would really be good to fit in with our theme during the week. To see the fire engine in real life, it makes it real for the learners,” she said.

“The learners actually showed [what] they were learning about this week, and they could answer all the questions the firefighters had for them.”

Firefighter Irene Ngwepe asked the learners many questions about what to do if there is smoke in a building, what to do if their clothes catch fire and what to do when crossing the road. At the end of the discussion, the learners got to see how a fire hose works and test out the hose on the fire truck with the help of the firefighters at the school.
