Cardinal rules to succeed in life

SUNNINGHILL St Peter's College pupil, Chesnay Havenga, gives the community her success tips.

Some people, such as Apple’s co-founder, the late Steve Jobs, can have a great impact on your life; and this should not be underestimated.

His innovations have touched nearly every aspect of our lives, such as computers, movies, music and mobile phones. Although Jobs’ greatest legacy is the drive he had to succeed.

Here is my take on the rules and values underpinning success in life. Any of us can adopt them to unleash our inner potential. The life skills below will help us work more responsibly, which will make a long-term difference in our academic performance, participation in the classroom, in our future workplace, and in life:

1. Believe in yourself – use affirmations like “I’ll make it happen” and words such as “yes, I can, and I will”.

2. Do what you love – passion is everything.

3. Have a vision, and believe in it – don’t lose sight of the big, powerful vision you have for yourself: no vision = no direction. Write down what you want to accomplish in your school career and in life.

4. Learn how to set and achieve your goals.

5. Don’t find and look for mistakes (faults) – rather find a solution.

6. Minimise discouraging words such as “no, can’t, won’t, never, maybe, and if” – these six words can hold you back from reaching your full potential.

7. Eliminate excuses – get ahead in life: learn more, do more, read more and manage your time effectively and efficiently.

8. Ask yourself every day: “Did I give my best effort to today’s activities?”

9. Be creative and innovative, connect things – creativity is connecting things: connect ideas from different fields and enrich others.

10. Take action on your dreams enthusiastically, and live them – Let your dreams be informed, educated, inspired and entertained.

11. Develop an “I’ll make it happen” attitude – it will positively impact your attendance, classroom participation, personal decision-making and overall academic achievement.
