Scouts take on rough terrain for annual cycle challenge

JOBURG - The annual Wally Kohler Enduro Cycle Rally was held at Delta Park.

Event organiser, Thomas Helmrich said, “More than 200 Cubs and Scouts from around Johannesburg, including the 1st Bryanston pack participated in the rally.”

Teams of between four and six riders competed to see how many laps of a set course could be completed within a three-hour time limit. Each team was given a baton which had to be passed over to the next rider in the pit area. A number of obstacles, ramps and a tricky mud section were also set up on the course to make the task more challenging.

In the Cub section of the competition, team Accelerate and team X Ray of the 1st White Horse Cub Pack were placed first and second, completing a total of 50 laps and 49 laps respectively. It was indeed a very close race, with last year’s winners 1st Rosebank Cub Pack coming in third place with a total of 47 completed laps. In total, all the Cub teams participating completed 873 laps, covering a combined distance of 553km.

For the Scout section of the rally, participants were divided into junior and senior teams. The junior race was won by 1st Rosebank Scout Troop with 55 completed laps, followed by 1st Fairlands on 48 laps and 1st Greenside on 47 laps. In the senior age group, 1st Blairgowrie completed 61 laps and covered a distance of 46.7km to secure a win. Second place went to 1st Victory View on 54 laps, followed by 1st Fairlands on 53 laps.
