Kyalami prepares for marathon

KYALAMI - On 24 August, Midrand Striders Running Club will host their annual Breakthru Midrand half marathon and a fun run at the Kyalami Equestrian Park.

The race will commence at 7am and will finish where it started.

This year’s race consists of a 21.1km, 10km and 5km route.

Leon Baker Club’s men’s captain said it had been organised to fall later on the calendar this year to facilitate the inclusion of a 21.1km route which meets the requirements of an official half marathon.

Since its inception about 15 years ago, the marathon has increased in popularity. This year, the club is hoping to attract 5 000 runners.

The new date sees a change in the route, which the captain of the women’s runners, Lynn Dawries, said is more scenic than last year with more country and less traffic.

The first 100 runners will receive a silver medal, and a bronze medal will go to the next 1 400 runners.

The race will impose a three-hour cut off time, requiring all runners to finish within the allocated time to receive a medal.

This year’s Midrand half marathon has been given a difficulty rating of four, but all recreational runners and walkers are welcome to participate in the 5km run.

Community members can enter online, and late entries will be accepted at 6am on the morning of the race.
