Konki scores on top
LONEHILL- Brendon Konki, a Lonehill resident and Grade 10 pupil who currently plays for the Kaiser Chiefs U19 team and Nike Academy is doing both his school and family proud.
According to media liaison officer Candice Gibson of HeronBridge College, the school is extremely proud of Konki and they expect great things to come from him. Konki was selected out of 150 players to play at the African Soccer Finals. At the finals he was one of only two African players selected to participate in the global showcase taking place at the Nike Academy in England on 24 November.
Konki gave Nike an exclusive interview on this amazing achievement. “I was five years old when my dad brought me my first football and I had a kick around with him; he’s been my biggest supporter ever since,” said Konki. He explained how soccer legends like Thierry Henry inspired him to begin a career in the sport.
“I play the game a lot like him with my pace and eye for the goal. I’m still working on being suave like him though,” he said.
Konki explained how playing at the Kaizer Chiefs U19 Nike Football Training Centre in Soweto is a great honour for him and his family.
“To be part of the set up at Chiefs, as they are the biggest football club in South Africa and one of the biggest football brands in Africa, blows my mind,” he said.
He went onto say that the expert training he receives at the centre is world-class. When asked about his soccer idol, Cristiano Ronaldo came out on top for Konki and he explained that he is big supporter of Real Madrid Football Club. “I like associating myself with brilliance and success, hence why I support them and like their style of play too and with players like Ronaldo in the team, they are bound for more success,” he said.
