A smooth and Evan drive to victory

KYALAMI - Kyalami resident Evan Hutchison will soon clinch his seventh South African Special Vehicle Cross Country title in Vryburg, with the title practically in the bag.

The Motorite Racing driver drove to victory on 12 September as he steered the Motorite BAT Viper, navigated by Danie Stassen, to a safe second in the Vryburg endurance race.

“I suppose it’s time for another new sticker,” said a smiling Hutchison as he pointed out the decal on the newly-branded Motorite BAT depicting his 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2012 and 2013 SA Cross Country titles.

“I have to say I am delighted. We had a dominant start to the season, and once we had drawn clear of Lance Trethewey and Geoff Minnit in the championship chase with our four wins, we just needed to be consistent,” he said, speaking of their rivals.

Hutchison admitted that his race was not without difficulty. “We had a rare electrical fault that pegged us back when we retired in the last race, but it was on our side today and it was Tretheway and Minnit’s chance to retire, and by finishing second to the guys who won the battle today.”

Hutchison said the final round of the championship, which will be held on 30 and 31 October in Westonaria, was a mere formality.

“We have enough points in hand to see to it that Mark Corbett and Juan Mohr [they are second to the pair in the championship] need more than they can score next race to beat us. We are the champions,” he declared.

“I need to thank all my sponsors, especially [the Motorite team]. [Not forgetting] my navigator, Stassen.

“It’s my seventh SA championship. Man, I’m happy.”
