Golf industry veteran, Norman Mashaba has been announced as the new director of golf at the Nicklaus-designed course of Steyn City.

In his role as director, Mashaba will oversee all aspects of Steyn City‘s golf offering – from maintenance of the course and greenkeeping to providing a consummate guest and golfing experience.

His experience and understanding of the local and international golfing fraternity is a significant asset to Steyn City and is matched by a passion for the game which he is exceptionally eager to share.

When he was just 12 years old he had his first taste of the greens came when he started caddying for players at the Kensington Golf Club which ignited his enthusiasm, spurring him to complete his apprenticeship at the South African Professional Golfers Association (PGA).

Mashaba turned pro in 1990, going on to represent South Africa four times in the International Team Championships. At 55, he remains active in tournament play, taking part in the SA Senior Tour.

He honed his directorship skills as a member of the South African PGA board of directors and served in 2000 and 2004.

“I have been involved in the development side of the game, coaching young black professionals taking part in the Sunshine Tour. My most recent post, prior to joining Steyn City, was as a golf coach at Kimiad Driving Range in Pretoria,” Mashaba said.

He has also lent his voice and insights to SuperSport, commentating on major events like the US Open, the US Masters, the US PGA, the British Open and the Nedbank Challenge.

“This appointment is the first of its kind. Steyn City has taken a bold step in transforming professional golf, and golf in South Africa in general.”

Mashaba added that his view about his appointment at Steyn City was greater than himself. “I believe that it is a launching pad for transformation in the golfing industry.”

The chief executive of the Professional Golfers Association of South Africa, Ivano Ficalbi said, “The PGA is proud and excited about the appointment of a PGA fellow professional to this position. Norman has been a member of the PGA for almost 30 years and has contributed to its growth, as well as the growth of its memberships and the game itself, during this period.

“I was personally fortunate to serve my apprenticeship under Norman when I joined the association, and I look forward to seeing him play a role in the continued success of Steyn City.”
