Fourways resident runs the Comrades to raise awareness for Daily Bread
FOURWAYS – Runner Juliana Ambrosi was overwhelmed and humbled by the support she received from community members.
Fourways resident and runner Juliana Ambrosi was overwhelmed and humbled by the support she received from community members as she ventured out for her virtual Comrades event on 14 June.
The local runner was pleased to complete 87kms in laps around Fourways in 09:42:28 with the support of the local community.”I’m very grateful to CMA for creating this virtual event which gave us a chance to participate in a ‘different’ Comrades. Not the Comrades we know, but still an official event. To do it on home turf, with the support of residents was very special,” said Ambrosi.
She said it was wonderful to see fellow residents challenging themselves and running alongside her. “Night Guard Security was also brilliant, putting up a water point, following me in the car for a few laps and ensuring everyone was kept safe.”
Ambrosi said the run was easy and comfortable since it was on familiar territory. She said she felt the worst between 30km and 5kms, since she was battling with food and dehydration.
“Always a problem, but I came right after that and was comfortable the rest of the run. [It was] very easy to keep going when I had so much support and encouragement and lots of people to chat to.”
Ambrosi not only ran to reach her personal goals, but to raise awareness and funding for Daily Bread Org. She was pleased that there were plenty food donations on the day. “Support for both myself and Daily Bread far exceeded my expectations.
“More than anything, I think awareness has been created and hopefully now people will know that they can pledge their support to this charity.
“I am so proud to be a resident of Fourways, this community came together, many challenging themselves as well as giving to those in need. Thank you is not enough. Hoping we made a small difference and all continue to do our bit for those in need of a helping hand.”
Founder of Daily Bread Org Charmaine McGinley said she felt blessed to be chosen by such a community-driven fundraiser. “This blessing will once again enable us to feed the families in Kya Sand and Msawawa who have been hard hit by Covid-19.”It means for a while longer, we get to do what we do all because she did what she did.”
