Diepsloot residents show their strength in fitness competition
DIEPSLOOT – Various fitness techniques put Diepsloot athletes to the test in a competition held at a local gym.
A fitness competition held on 1 May in Diepsloot saw a number of winners for various categories.
A total of 23 participants signed up to take part in the fitness competition organised by Rock Solid Gym.
Founder of the gym Thinkwell Moyo was pleased to see a number of women from the gym also take part in the competition even when it was open for everyone. “I think the competition went well, and it was good to see a good turnout even with a few complaints of it being short notice.

“Rock Solid Gym conducted its first fitness and weightlifting competition for the first time since it was launched 12 December last year.”
Moyo founded the gym with the intention of helping women by giving them self-defence skills against gender-based-violence.
The day’s events offered contestants boxing, classic bodybuilding, and competitions in dead lifting, bench pressing and squats.
Some winners of the day included Sisona Mdingi in classic bodybuilding, who was a first-time entrant at Rock Solid Gym. In the ladies’ squatting competition, Mapula Ramotale placed first with Dudu Mashamba in second.

Mdingi, who described himself as a gym lover, said he wants to compete professionally since he started his gym journey in 2016.
“Diepsloot is definitely limiting because there are no opportunities. I have a goal to be a professional in the industry and I’m hoping something does happen,” he said.
Moyo said he is hopeful that another competition can happen in the community. He said from the success of the competition has prompted more people to consider joining gyms since they ‘were motivated by the event’. “If we get the support, we are planning to have the next one on September this year.”
