Learner shoots and scores as she lands the South African National squad for basketball
BYRANSTON – The Michael Mount learner received news that she had been selected to be part of the South Africa U18 basketball national squad in July.
Many teenagers are faced with challenges such as finding their true calling, identity and talents while juggling their social lives and studies.
A Michael Mount Waldorf School Grade 11 learner has found her calling in basketball. Aleksandra Spencer, started her journey playing basketball at the age of eight. She developed a passion for the sport while playing with her older sister who inspired her to achieve her dreams of becoming a professional basketball player.
Aleksandra explained the position she plays, “I am a point guard, also known as position one, which is the player that controls the game and runs the offence.
“I also enjoy playing shooting guard, position two, whose main objective is to score points for their team and steal the ball on the defence.”
Aleksandra received news that she had been selected for the South Africa U18 national squad for basketball in July, which brought her a step closer to reaching her goal of one day becoming a professional basketball player.
To reach the milestone, she had to go toe to toe with numerous talented players from all over South Africa, who aspired to play in the national team.
While accomplishing a goal as big as making it to the national squad for basketball, many factors contributed to her success. “Naturally, my family have been supportive but more importantly the Lunnemann’s, who have been coaching inspiring and motivating me throughout the years. The Lunnemann’s are our basketball coaches at Michael Mount – Dubravka Lunnemann and Danja Lunnemann.”
Aleksandra is hopeful of becoming a professional basketball player one day as she plans to further her skills at university.
