Ziningi ‘Zii’ Ndlovu crowned Fourways Road Runner’s sportsperson of the year

From conquering the 2024 Comrades Marathon as the first woman home to being crowned Sportsperson of the Year, Zii uncovers her incredible 2024 and the bold new challenges she's tackling in 2025.

In the world of running, where dedication meets determination, one name has been making strides and capturing hearts – Ziningi Ndlovu, affectionately known as Zii.

Awarded the 2024 Sportsperson of the Year by Fourways Road Runners, Zii’s journey is a testament to perseverance and community spirit.

“Being recognised by the club is truly an incredible honour,” she said. “It means a recognition of not just my performance, but the hard work, sacrifices, and dedication. This award is also a reflection of the amazing support I’ve received from my running club, my coaches, my family, and those who wish me well; without them, none of this would be possible.”

Last year was a landmark for her, highlighted by taking the first women’s position for the club in the iconic Comrades Marathon. Reflecting on her journey since, Zii said, “My focus this year has been on injury-free running, and I was pleasantly surprised with a few podium finishes, most notably third place at both Kudus and Johnson Crane.”

These unexpected successes have fuelled her passion as she prepares for the Comrades Marathon on June 8. “Right now, all my energy is going into training for Comrades, and I’m excited to see where the journey leads.

“My role has evolved from simply representing the club at races to becoming more involved in uplifting and inspiring other runners.” Recent sponsorships have helped ease financial pressures on her.

While 2025 is still unfolding, Zii is proud of her start, including a 10-minute improvement in her Two Oceans Marathon time. Beyond personal bests, her biggest goal is to inspire other women, especially mothers.

Having overcome injuries and mental barriers, Zii understands resilience. “Resilience comes from showing up, even on the hard days. Every setback is an opportunity to learn and grow.”

While Comrades is her main focus, Zii is open to new challenges such as trail races to ‘push me out of my comfort zone’. She believes in setting bold goals, but also in making room for fun and growth.

Zii plans to inspire others by leading by example, by showing up consistently, sharing her journey honestly, and celebrating progress over perfection.

For aspiring runners, Zii advised, “Start where you are, use what you have, and be consistent. Running teaches you discipline, resilience, and self-belief, and those qualities will carry you far beyond the finish line.”
