Premier announces 2026 LIV Golf Tournament coming to SA shores

Steyn City has been confirmed as the official venue for the 2026 LIV Golf Tournament, a major international sporting event that will be staged in South Africa for the first time.

The announcement was made by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, who revealed that the province had been nominated as the next host following the tournament’s most recent edition in the United Kingdom.

Scheduled to take place from March 20 to 22 next year, the tournament is often referred to as the ‘World Cup of Golf’, and will feature 54 of the world’s top golfers competing on South African soil for the first time in the tournament’s history.

“It’s a multi-billion-rand tournament.,” Lesufi said. “[We will have] 54 of the top golfers coming to our show for the first time in the history of our country.”

He also acknowledged the role of the national government in backing Gauteng’s hosting bid. “I want to take this opportunity to thank the minister of sports for partnering, or pulling us as the host province, and providing all the necessary support.”

Public interest is already running high. “The tickets are already on sale, and we’re excited that almost 25 000 tickets have been sold. We are urging South Africans to take this opportunity.”

To build momentum and grow participation in the sport, the provincial government is also introducing grassroots programmes as part of the tournament’s legacy plans. “We are introducing golf on Wednesdays in some of our schools, as part of the build-up to this important tournament. We’re also pleased by the announcement that the U12s will enter the tournament free of charge, so they can be part of the development of golf.”
