Metorail disappoints mourners
JOBURG - Many mourners were left disappointed when Metrorail trains experienced some delays while transporting people to the FNB Stadium for the Nelson Mandela memorial service on Tuesday morning.
People took to Twitter to complain about the long delays:
@Ms_Mazz tweeted: “Can #Metrorail do something here! We’ve been stuck near Mayfair just before Grovner Station for 35min. Don’t kill our spirits #mandela.”
However, people were determined to make it to the memorial and some even decided to walk from where the trains had been stuck to the stadium.
@craigjacobs tweeted: “Blessed that we made it after our Metrorail got stuck and we walked through the rain to get to the #MandelaMemorial #FNBSoccerCity”
Metrorail explained that the delays were due to power supply issues but were working on the problem to get people to the stations where Park and Ride busses were waiting for them to arrive.
Metrorail confirmed that trains running between the CBD and FNB Stadium had started running again but with delays due to high passenger volumes.
