Urbani rakes in applause for Morecambe

MONTECASINO – Craig Urbani, an internationally-renowned actor, left the audience enthralled with his performance of the Olivier Award-Winning West End play entitled Morecambe at Montecasino.

The solo play requires an actor to be versatile, to carry various roles telling the story of the life of British comedian Eric Bartholomew with the wit and magnetism that he himself exuded. The action takes place in a ghost theatre in Bartholomew’s, better known by his stage name Morecambe, mind from the late ’30s to the early ’80s. Given the requirement for accuracy in performance this show demands, Urbani more than impresses. His eloquence in expressing the different characters and their diverse British accents and his ease around the script makes you forget where you are.

The show itself also relates shows that Bartholomew and his partner and friend Ernest Wise, who is played by a tuxedo-wearing puppet on stage, hosted during their heydays. The two are legends in the British TV and comedy circles, with Morecambe voted one of the greatest top 100 Britons and also a great favourite on the list of British comedians of all time. A larger than life statue of Morecambe in his hometown of Morecambe is a prominent and permanent reminder of the effect he left in British TV.

The show is presented at Montecasino until 7 June and is directed by one of South Africa’s most highly regarded theatre directors, Alan Swerdlow.
