Urban Strings takes centre stage
FOURWAYS - Urban Strings, a Johannesburg-based string collective band, has taken centre stage as South Africa’s up-and-coming performing act.
Larah Eksteen, creative director and musical lead of the band said, “As a collective, [we] are musicians in [our] own right, each bringing [our] individuality that presents Urban Strings modern style across many genres.”
Officially formed at the end of last year, Urban Strings is made up of nine talented and diverse musicians brought together by their musical disciplines.
The string collective have come a long way since their debut on the stage of South African Idols Season 10, which saw them perform alongside winner Vincent Bones, Donald Moatshe, DJ Tira and the top 10 contestants.
The pool of talented professional electric and acoustic string musicians features violinists, viola players, cellists, double bassists, an electric harpist, pianist and guitarist.
The bold composition and versatility of the ensemble is depicted by Urban Strings’ glam electronica act, which can be described as a fusion of electro, live strings, neo-jazz and down-tempo grooves which appeal to a range of music lovers.
Far from the traditional form of a string collective, Urban Strings has taken a refreshing approach by pushing musical boundaries, evident in past collaborations with the likes of some South African artists such as ProVerb, RJ Benjamin, and Reason.
The string collective perform at corporate events, launches, private functions, music festivals, weddings and markets.
Urban Strings will be performing on 9 July at The Steamworks Gastropub in Fourways.
