Four Waterfall girls will spend Xmas in LA

WATERFALL - Four girl dancers of Studio Seven in Midrand will be heading to Los Angeles on scholarships to a dance studio.

The girls, Jade Lavarone, Katlyn Gouvias, Deanne Morris and Courtney Isaacs are part of an energetic hip-hop dance team known as Pulse Injected.

Their coach, Corlanie Botha said the dancers won the month-long scholarships to train with Dance Millenium, a dance studio that some well-known celebrities are part of, by entering the Performing Arts Championships competition in Los Angeles in July. The girls will travel to Los Angeles with their parents on a trip that could start off a huge dance career for them.

Botha said, “What inspires the team is their love for dancing, passion and a lot of commitment. I would advise people who want to take dance as a career to follow their dreams and make it happen for themselves.”

The dancers, aged between 12 and 14, also spoke about their trip. Jade Lavarone, who attends Brescia House School in Bryanston used to do ballet but two years ago fell in love with the hip-hop style of dancing. She said she danced because it was her passion and if she didn’t dance she would probably be stressed out about school and watch too much TV. “Dance helps me find new skills and form friendships, it is also a way for me to express myself,” she said.

Katelyn Gouvias of Reddam House Waterfall also has a background in ballet. She explained, “When I was small I watched dance movies such as Step Up and thought that the dancers were so cool, I wanted to be like them so I tried the moves at home. Then I asked my dad if I could do hip-hop and ever since my first class I fell in love with dancing.”

Deanne Morris, also from Reddam, has been dancing for six years. She said the reason she started dancing was because she used to do modern and jazz which she got bored with. “I decided to do something new,” she said. “When I first met coach Botha she invited me to do a flash mob with her which I really enjoyed and had a lot of fun, and that’s when I considered to start hi-hop.”

The fourth dancer, Courtney Isaacs attends St Teresa School in Sandton. She said she danced because it was something that she loved. “I have been dancing for many years,” she said. “It gets me out of my comfort zone. Dancing is my life, it makes me who I am and hip-hop is my favourite.”
