Kosie Smit celebrates a decade of theatre

MONTECASINO – Inspiring and inimitable producer, Kosie Smit, well known for his contribution to the Afrikaans theatre industry, celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Kosie House of Theatre, at a lavish lunch held at Montecasino.

Although still in its baby stages, Kosie House of Theatre has produced more than 100 productions – ranging from local theatre, TV, film and corporate work to international productions, carving a name for the production company in the Afrikaans industry.

Smit attributed their success to the fact that the company’s heart was in the right place. From lighting to acting, production and design, the business is passionate about theatre, and that, to him, is what continuously drives them forward.

Speaking at the event, Smit announced an exciting partnership with Pieter Torien Montecasino Theatre that will bring a fabulous line-up of Afrikaans productions to Montecasino for five months.

Mark Sage, manager of the Montecasino-based theatre said, “We are thrilled to host this fantastic season of Afrikaans productions presented by Kosie and his team.”

Sage added that the season of Afrikaans productions continued a wonderful collaboration that started a few years ago. “Year after year the audience and support for the Afrikaans shows has grown. Kosie and his team are simply the best at what they do and we have found that their productions are world-class, always featuring the best Afrikaans performers in the business.”

The year’s season of Afrikaans theatre includes a variety of productions including Altyd in my Drome (Always in my Dreams), Die Kaap is weer HOLMS (The Cape is HOLMS again), Oskar en die pienk tannie (Oscar and the pink aunty), Dop (Drink), and Liewe Heksie en die Sonneblom (Liewe Heksie and the Sunflower) will make for a veritable Afrikaans festival feast.

The season kicks off on 5 July with Altyd in my Drome, a reworked musical of legendary filmmaker Pierre de Wet’s classic from 1952, which will be on stage until 21 August.

Die Kaap is weer HOLMS, takes centre stage from 23 August until 4 September, then gives way to Oskar en die pienk tannie from 6 to 25 September.

Next in line is Dop, a bar, beer, and bro play about two men looking for the meaning of life which runs until 23 October.

Last but not least, is one of the sweetest, most eternally memorable characters from the pantheon of Afrikaans pantomime of childhood pleasure – Liewe Heksie en die Sonneblom, a musical puppet production originally created by Verna Vels and Hansie Visagie.

The Afrikaans season for 2016 ends on 27 November.

All tickets can be bought at Computicket.
